The mysterious # "16".

We're in the final stages of editing a write-up about western tooled and glop top cylinders which possess the high domed kick-up and what has been referred to over the years as the "16" base mark.

We've documented five to date, which include; McLeod & Faus, Mohns & Keltenbach (Eagle Glen), Roth & Co., Seegelken & Buckner and Weil Bros. & Sons.

Are there others? Are there eastern cylinders with the same anomaly?

Anyone wishing to contribute photos will receive credit if desired. Please take a few moments and click away with your camera. High resolution .jpg format photos are requested. Send us what you've got~

Thanks!

FOHBC 2016 Expo - Sacramento Cal.

Got the following from Ferd Meyer during my absence over the past several days. I'm pleased to pass this on to all.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Morning Bruce:

Would you be kind enough to post the Sacramento Flyer on your web site? We are getting a number of table requests and they are not available until 1 week before the Chattanooga National per policy. Thanks so much.

Next weekend - Santa Rosa!

Lou Lambert, Show Chairman, had the following to say;

Last years show was a huge success with almost double the public attendance from previous years and we’re expecting to exceed that this year. We have only four sales tables left as of today so don’t wait if your planning to be a part of our club show. There will be two old time collections being sold and some new dealers offering who knows what.
Dealers, don’t miss the dinner & get together Saturday night at the Union Hotel/ Restaurant in Santa Rosa. There will be raffles, great food, drink & full no host bar. This is one of the premier local places to meet at this killer family owned restaurant.

See you there!

What to do?

How to trash your feedback rating on eBay in one easy step.

-----------------------------------

Ebay, as of late, seems to have a lot of misrepresented bottles being offered.

Case in point is listing #131499202873.

Described as; "Antique Sulfolk Bitters Bottle"

The pictures clearly depict one of the 1970's fakes (not even a decent reproduction).

The listing description reads as follows; "ANTIQUE BITTERS MEDICINE BOTTLE. NOT A REPRODUCTION. "

Huh? Ray Charles could see this one for what it is from down the block!

Several days ago a short courtesy email was sent to the seller. It reads as follows;

"Good morning;

I thought that I'd drop you a line so that you can correct the listing in order to protect your feedback.

The item that you are offering is indeed a repro; and a fairly late one at that. They were produced in both Taiwan and Italy. It's one of the repro's dating to the 1970's and is easy to spot from across a room.

The "America's Life Preserver" embossed on the side opposite Suffolk Bitters is the easiest way to spot it. Production techniques employed on this repro are also significantly different than the originals, which date ca. 1870's. Another identifier is that the originals were embossed with the proprietors names, "Philbrook & Tucker / Boston", whereas the repros are not. The repros were produced in several colors ranging from straight amber to shades of yellow, on into greens and teal. A few are also documented to exist in cobalt blue.

The repros, such as yours, are an inexpensive decorative item, and generally sell on the retail market in the $25~ - $50~ range, depending on condition and color.

Best of luck."

And still the listing runs. Maybe a few more equally informative emails to the seller are in order~

One can only wonder. Ignorance or ....? This listing would do P.T. Barnum proud.

Auction Results from ABA #61

I followed the progress of the western whiskey listings in ABA's Auction #61, which closed last evening, with a great deal of interest.

The "middle of the line", has remained strong like a bull, especially if a cylinder in this category has that little bit extra in terms of color and or character. Sadly, the upper end, over the past several years seems to have slipped badly.

The auction results seem to indicate a turning point for the "top end". Prices were strong, and the 10% buyers fee, although quite reasonable in today's auction arena, bolstered prices higher yet.

Here's the results of the auction.

Remember, click on the auction page and it will open in a large format readable window!
